AWS ER80S-D2 is designed to provide high-strength welds on high-sulfur bearing (free-cutting) steel or medium carbon steel.

AWS ER80S-D2 is a specification for a type of steel filler wire used in welding. The “ER” stands for “electrode or rod,” the “80” indicates the minimum tensile strength of the weld metal in thousands of pounds per square inch (psi), and the “S” indicates that it is a solid wire. The “D2” at the end of the specification indicates that the filler wire is designed for use in the shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) process, also known as “stick welding.”

In addition to a significant amount of silicon and manganese, this wire contains a 0.50% molybdenum alloy to produce welds with high ductility, excellent impact values, and tensile strength.

AWS ER80S-D2 – Characteristics

(1) This product contains 0.5% Mo to provide higher deposit strength in both the as welded and stress relived conditions. It contains high levels of Manganese and Silicon to provide good wetting and good rust and scale tolerance.

(2) This product is also used for all position welding of high tensile pipe and tubing commonly found in earthmoving and construction equipment.It is available in forms suitable for MIG welding.
